Design

Designing a zoo exhibit is a comprehensive process where we first define the purpose of the exhibit, such as education, entertainment, or conservation.

Then, based on the knowledge of the species to be housed, we determine the layout of the enclosure, its perimeter walls, internal partitions, and separations, as well as the positioning of visitor paths and viewing areas. Simultaneously with the design of the visual environment, we specify the mechanical systems required to maintain climatic conditions, including heating-cooling, lighting, and water engineering elements if needed. The credibility of the exhibit is enhanced by the decoration elements, such as realistic replicas of rock formations, giant tree trunks, and the introduced live vegetation.

Education is a crucial consideration, so informational signs and interactive tools are also included in the plans.

Sustainability, environmental enrichment, and ensuring the well-being of animals are also key. When presenting numerous dangerous animal species, the safety of animal caretakers and visitors is a primary concern, and the design of the animal housing space should also be easily manageable and maintainable for veterinary care.

Among our projects is the design of complete new zoo concepts, technologies, and visual elements. A notable project was the Lake Tisza Ecocentre, which includes a zoo and Europe’s largest freshwater aquarium system with a million liters of water.

We also designed the Budapest Zoo’s Cápasuli marine pools and water engineering, Hungary’s largest marine aquarium. Additionally, in Budapest, our company served as the lead designer for the Budapest Zoo Biodome project, conceptualizing one of the world’s most complex zoo systems, from concept to detailed plans. It spans 7.5 million liters of freshwater and saltwater, over 30,000 square meters of built artificial rock decorations, and tropical vegetation that includes trees, along with sharks, elephants, primates, predators, and birds, all separated seamlessly in a natural environment covering 17,500 square meters.
